Maui Outdoor Circle will present an Exceptional Trees bus tour from 9:30 to 1 p.m. July 28. The tour will begin at 9:30 a.m. in Paia and continue throughout Upcountry until 1 p.m.
The narrated tour, led by Ernie Rezents, a certified arborist and professor emeritus of agriculture at the University of Hawaii and University of Hawaii Maui College, will discuss the arboricultural and historical significance of each site.
The Exceptional Trees along the route include a Moreton Bay fig at the Old Baldwin Manor, a jacaranda along Hanamu Road, and the array of rainbow shower trees soon in bloom along Baldwin Avenue, which were planted by Ethel Baldwin and later by Mayor Hannibal Tavares.
Statewide ordinances provide for the protection of trees designated as exceptional from destruction due to land development or abusive activities. Maui County recognizes 28 such specimens located from Lahaina to Hana on Maui and on Molokai.
This event will commemorate the many centenary trees at the Old Baldwin Manor in recognition of the centennial year of The Outdoor Circle, which was founded in 1912.
Cost is $25, which includes a box lunch and transportation. Reservations are required no later than Friday by calling Andrea Binkley at 573-0336.
