An 18-year-old Arizona man died Sunday afternoon after falling about 50 feet from the Makapipi Bridge in East Maui, rescue officials said.
The man went over a guardrail near the bridge before slipping and falling onto rocks and into a pond, according to Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga.
Police identified the man as Mathew Cote of Mesa.
Witnesses said that the man did not resurface. The water below the bridge is not accessible from Hana Highway.
Passing motorists were flagged down by bystanders and asked to call for help, said Ryan Joslin, spokesman for the Maui County Paramedics Association.
Fire responders arrived at the scene just before 2 p.m.
The man's body was found submerged at 2:25 p.m. by a local resident who accessed the pond from downstream with dive gear. The diver reported seeing the victim approximately 30 feet underwater.
Rescue efforts were suspended at that time, and body-recovery efforts were initiated.
The Maui Fire Department's Air 1 helicopter flew responders into the pond to extract the body, Mainaga said.
