This is only a drill

July 21, 2012
The Maui News

FIRST PHOTO: A Navy Seahawk helicopter lands on the helipad of Maui Memorial Medical Center on Friday, as part of the Rim of the Pacific international maritime exercises. The mock scenario involved the helicopter transporting four patients from Oahu to Maui Memorial.

SECOND PHOTO: After landing on the helipad, the "patients" were taken to the hospital emergency department, where doctors and staff were standing by to "treat" their injuries. Shown is Dr. Randy Niklason, Maui Memorial emergency department physician, who is "treating" Kacy Takamori, emergency department nurse. The "injuries" were created from rubber and latex. This is the first time that U.S. hospitals have participated in RIMPAC, and Maui Memorial was the only Neighbor Island hospital to take part in the drill. "We were excited to be a part of RIMPAC and this drill," said Wesley Lo, Maui Region chief executive officer. "Our team consisted of many departments working collaboratively to ensure that it went off smoothly."
