1912 - It is gratifying to everyone who is interested in promoting the interests of Hawaii, to read the favorable reports coming from Stockholm regarding Duke Kahanamoku. According to the dispatches, he is the lion of the hour at the Swedish capitol.

1937 - Climaxing 33 years of serving the mercantile wants of Valley Isle patrons, the Maui Dry Goods & Grocery Co. Ltd. headed by Joaquin Garcia, dedicates its new two-story store and office building on the corners of Market and Main streets. A dedicatory Chinese banquet will be held tonight.

50 Years Ago

1962 - "You have one of the best courses in the world here," remarked Bing Crosby, noted singer, actor and sportsman who spent a day at Kaanapali playing the Royal Lahaina Golf Club's newly opened nine-hole layout.

25 Years Ago

1987 - Standing by the Keawalai Church in Makena, minister Walter Higbee wondered what kind of impact the filming of the TV show "Growing Pains" would have on his tranquil environment. The hit sitcom was about to descend on the pretty church to shoot a scene for an upcoming episode.

2002 - Members of a select group of high school students and teachers broke new ground at Maui Community College as they extracted DNA in a science laboratory and discussed the ethics behind cloning. The enrichment program was hosted by MCC's planned biotechnology program.
