There have been a lot of letters for and against the giant Kihei mall under consideration.
Based on my more than four decades on the island, people should understand that what the people of Maui want one way or another will make no difference in the outcome. Quite likely the mall will be built because regardless of how it will affect the residents, it will put money in some people's pockets and that will be that.
The fact that Maui will become even more ordinary and ruin small businesses until it is like anywhere else and not the super-fine place it is or was, is a shame.
Devotion to money for merely having a lot of it is the prevailing religion.
If you do not wish to kneel before that god, fight with your vote and refuse to shop in that mall until it goes broke. I have no other answer to offer.
