The Maui News

Two students with Maui ties were among the 66 to receive short white coats that signify they are "physicians in training" at the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine at a ceremony Friday at the Kaimuki High School auditorium.

Seabury Hall graduate Rafael J. Oania and St. Anthony graduate Melissa H. Corson were among the first-year medical school class, which was chosen from more than 1,600 applicants, according to a press release.

At the ceremony, students were given a doctor's coat, but only hip length, not the calf-length of a physician. They also took the Hippocratic oath, following a long tradition of doctors swearing to practice medicine ethically.
