Who says that attending an art gallery event has to be quiet or introspective?
From 7 to 11 p.m. Saturday, Maui Arts & Cultural Center in Kahului will get art lovers in the mood to socialize with a fun event full of OP art, film noir and performance art during its fourth ArT=Mixx in Yokouchi Pavilion Courtyard.
"ArT=Mixx is a new concept at the MACC. "We introduced it earlier this year for the over-21 and young-at-heart crowd. The interactive mixer is generally themed to go along with the current art exhibit in Schaefer International Gallery," says its director Neida Bangerter.

The most recent installment of ArT = Mixx will delight the crowds with its theme of “Black & White Edition,” in which you may wear artsy black and white attire and then enter a costume contest.

In this installment, dubbed the "Black & White Edition," producers Bangerter along with Trevor Arnholt (video artist) and Toben Lindell (who is a graphic designer and DJ artist) have compiled and created an amazing variety of interactive media with five DJs and six VJs: video mapping, OP art displays, film noir projections, even a black and white marching band. Guests are invited to wear black and white attire for a costume contest.
"The central idea around this concept is to connect people to art in ways that are both fun and stimulating, yet beyond what they think of as 'art,' " says vice president of programming for the MACC, Colleen Furukawa. "Art enters our lives in many ways and it is present everywhere."
Networking is paramount at ArT=Mixx as is just having fun. Maui's popular DJs will spin house and techno tunes for dancing.
The MACC's built-in food and beverage bars will serve a variety of colorful drinks and healthy appetizers made from fresh and local ingredients by Three's Bar & Grill, a popular Kihei restaurant. Choose from Caprese salad with pohole fern to turkey lettuce wraps to crab cakes with Asian slaw.
The MACC offers a casual and friendly setting to gather with friends and meet new ones as you share the experience. The County of Maui sponsors this free event.
