Gabbard will fight for equality, women’s rights

July 31, 2012
The Maui News

The Democratic primary election on Aug. 11 marks an important opportunity for Maui residents to elect a leader to U.S. Congress who will champion our concerns and interests in Washington. Tulsi Gabbard is that champion.

During her deployment to the Middle East with the Hawaii National Guard in 2004, Tulsi saw firsthand the great strides our government takes to fight for freedom and liberty overseas and that for Congress to settle for anything less is unacceptable. Tulsi will work tirelessly to eradicate this injustice, fighting for equality for all citizens. She invites you to test her mettle.

Admittedly, my support for Tulsi extends beyond her evolved statements supporting the repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act. While working on her campaign, I've enjoyed respect and tolerance from my peers and superiors. I can safely say that she lives the same image of fairness that she projects. How many of our politicians can say half as much?

Mufi Hannemann made it clear he opposes the repeal of DOMA because of his own, personal biases that have nothing to do with the best interests of his constituents. His most recent attacks are nothing more than machine politics promulgated to advance his own electoral prospects at the expense of the needs of the citizens of our great state.

Tulsi is the champion we need in the second congressional district to fight for equality, women's rights and the middle class. I hope you join me in supporting Tulsi Gabbard.
