County worker picked as DAGS deputy

HONOLULU - Maui County's accounting system administrator has been named deputy director of the state Department of Accounting and General Services.

Gov. Neil Abercrombie made the appointment this week of Maria E. Zielinski. Her official start date is Sept. 4.

Budget and Finance Director Kalbert Young worked with Zielinski when he served as finance director for Maui County. Young will be working closely with Zielinski in overseeing the state's Comprehensive Annual Financial Report.

Zielinski, 59, has 30 years of financial management experience in nonprofits, local government, financial services, commercial property acquisition and development, and agriculture and consumer food commodity production industries.

Since 2010, she has served as accounting system administrator for the county. Prior to that, she was the director and chief financial officer for the California School Employees Association, chief financial officer for Haleakala Ranch and Haleakala Properties, and chief financial officer of Baldwin Pacific Properties.

She became a certified public accountant in New York and is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, Hawai'i Society of Certified Public Accountants, New York Society of Certified Public Accountants and the Government Financial Officers Association.

A graduate of the City University of New York Brooklyn College, she holds a bachelor's degree accounting and biology.
