Abel Alves Vares, 95 of Kihei and formerly of Wailuku, passed away on August 2, 2012. He was born on February 25, 1917 at Grove Ranch, Maui.
Family and friends are invited for visitation at St. Anthony's Church in Wailuku on Thursday, August 9, 2012 from 9 am to 10:30 am, with Mass at 10:30 am. Burial to follow at Maui Veteran's Cemetery in Makawao at 1 pm. Borthwick Norman's Mortuary assisted with arrangements.
He retired as a Major with the Hawaii Army National Guard and was also a retired X-ray Technologist at Maui Memorial Medical Center and Kaiser Clinic.
He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Eva Vares; sons, Roland Vares of Pukalani, Maui; Clinton (Vicki) Vares of Hilo, Hawaii and Keith (Chong) Vares of Aurora, Colorado; brother, Wilfred (Dorothy) Vares of Santa Clara, California; 4 grandchildren, 7 great grand children, and numerous nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John Alves Vares and Antoinette Costa Vares; brothers, Thomas, Ernest, Manuel, Benjamin, Patrick and John Jr., and sister Dorothy Gomes.
We were blessed to have him in our lives for so many years. He will be deeply missed.
