Pahoa to get shopping center

PAHOA, Hawaii - A $20 million shopping center is being planned for Pahoa.

The 104,000-square-foot planned development would include a supermarket, retail shops, a restaurant and a medical clinic.

Hawaii Tribune-Herald reports that Pahoa residents are being asked to submit recommendations so that the shopping center can reflect the history of Pahoa town. Project consultant Jon McElvaney says this will be done through public meeting and emails.

Landowner Bryson Kuwahara has requested to change the property zoning from agricultural to urban.

Pending approvals, McElvaney says construction would begin sometime next year.
