Sally Ride died recently. She was the first woman in space. I was very saddened by her untimely death at 61 years.
One day, about 10 years ago, while teaching school, I asked my students to write letters to her about the space program. A week later, our class got back so many wonderful space souvenirs plus new and very educational and motivational tapes about living in a spaceship. These tapes showed many fun types of creative experiments for my students. Since then, my students and I wrote to Sally many times and she always had time to answer our letters.
Sally was an astronaut, teacher and author. But just as important, a wonderful person who cared about people. Thank you, Sally, for making my students lives more full, significant and interesting.
Sally, you are in heaven now riding among the stars.
