Maui swimmers garner seven zone titles

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - Maui swimmers claimed seven first-place finishes - three by Nicolas Wright - at the USA Swimming zone championships that took place from Aug. 7 though Saturday, helping Hawaii place eighth in the team standings.

Wright, competing in the boys 17-18 division, won the 50-meter freestyle in 25.60, the 100 butterfly in 58.25 and the 100 free in 55.43. He was also second in the 200 fly and ninth in the 100 backstroke.

Jasmine O'Brien was the girls 10-and-under champion in the 100 back (1:17.38) and 200 free (2:27.63). She was the runner-up in the 100 free, and placed fifth in the 50 back, sixth in the 200 individual medley and 11th in the 100 fly.

Carter Suzuki won the boys 17-18 400 IM (5:00.55), and was second in the 100 and 200 breaststroke and 13th in the 400 free.

Cole Drake, also swimming in the boys 17-18 division, won the 400 free (4:22.04), and was third in the 1,500 free, sixth in the 200 free, 400 IM and 200 back and 11th in the 100 back.

In the boys 15-16 division, Jonah Hu was second in the 200 breast, third in the 100 breast and fifth in the 50 free, and Mika Kane was fourth in the 100 back, eighth in the 200 back, 33rd in the 200 free, 37th in the 100 free and 42nd in the 50 free.

Moniz records ace on Waiehu's 16th hole

WAIEHU - Arnold Moniz of Wailuku recorded a hole-in-one at Waiehu Municipal Golf Course on Sunday.

Moniz aced the 116-yard 16th hole, using a 9-iron. The shot was witnessed by Vance Morton, Jordan Helle and Dean Cramp.

Ohana Futbol accepting players

WAILUKU - The application deadline for the Ohana Futbol Association's fall season is Aug. 30.

Games are scheduled for Sept. 8-Nov. 10. The fees are $40 for high school-age participants, $35 for players 12-14 and $30 for players under 10.

Cooney Surf Contest scheduled for Oct. 6

KUAU - The eighth annual Cooney Surf Contest is scheduled for 7 a.m.-5 p.m. on Oct. 6 at Hookipa Beach Park.

The event will have nine divisions, covering all ages. The entry fee is $25, which also pays for lunch and a T-shirt.
