'PICNIC FOR POKI' AT KA'AHUMANU CHURCH

Roselani Place and Ola Na Mele Productions present "Picnic for Poki" from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Kaahumanu Church in Wailuku. Entertainment this month is "Just Us." Picnic for Poki," honors the late Allen "Braddah Poki" Pokipala. Attendees may bring a lawn chair or mat, their lunch and a friend.

Support conservation through art. The East Maui Watershed Partnership and Viewpoints Gallery celebrate their eighth annual juried art exhibition, Malama Wao Akua 2012 on Friday. The event coincides with Makawao’s Third Friday Town Party. The exhibition showcases local artists with Maui Nui native species as the subject. The show runs through Sept. 16. ALOHA FRIDAY SUMMER CONCERT SERIES

The Fairmont Kea Lani, Maui and University of Hawaii, Maui College's Institute of Hawaiian Music (IHM) present "Aloha Friday Summer Concert Series." Students from IHM will be performing in the hotel lobby between 5 and 6 p.m. The concerts are free and open to all.

FRIDAY NIGHT IS ART NIGHT IN LAHAINA

Stroll through dozens of art galleries in LahainaTown tonight from 6 to 9 for special gallery shows, featured artists in action and refreshments all free and open to the public. Pick up the walking map of participants in the Lahaina Visitor Center located at the Old Lahaina Courthouse from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

MAKAWAO THIRD FRIDAY BLOCK PARTY

"Edge of the Forest," translates into the Hawaiian word, Makawao and it's the theme for this month's town block party. Building off of Viewpoints Gallery's annual "Malama Wao Akua" art opening to support East Maui Watershed Partnership, Makawao town will join in celebrating neighboring nonprofits who protect the land, forest, and important natural resources for which the town is known. Music on three stages, a wide variety of food vendors, fall fashion show, activities for the whole family and more. LANA'I SLACK KEY GUITAR FESTIVAL

The second annual Lanai Slack Key Guitar Festival kicks off with a Slack Key Guitar Dinner under the stars at the Manele Bay Four Seasons from 6 to 9 p.m. The festival includes seven venues of slack key over three days. See Maui Beat on page 3 for details or call (800)-321-4666.

STORY OF HAWAII MUSEUM OPENING

The Story of Hawaii Museum, Gift Shop &?Gallery is having its grand opening celebration with live music, entertaining presentations, and refreshments. The celebration is from 5 to 7:30 p.m. and the public is invited to attend. As part of the celebration, the museum will launch "Hawaiian History Evenings" with historian and ukulele teacher Mele Fong, which will then be held the first Friday of every month. 'A REFLECTION OF KALAUPAPA' EXHIBITION

A talk-story session on "A Reflection of Kalaupapa Past, Present and Future" will take place at the MACC McCoy Studio Theater, from 2 to 4 p.m. Photographs by Wayne Levin supplmented by archival documents reflect the unique history of Kalaupapa. The discussion features eight panelists, including Val Monson as moderator; Boogie Kahilihiwa, resident of Kalaupapa for more than 50 years; Ka'iulani Hess whose parents were both at Kalaupapa; Kalapana Kollars, whose ancestors were at Kalaupapa since the early years; Sol Kaho'ohalahala, who had ancestors at Kalaupapa; Donna Sterling, who is the descendant of one of the first three women sent to Kalaupapa in 1866; Taka Harada, whose brother was sent to Kalaupapa; Maika'i Kapahe'e Kaufman, who is 12 years old and whose ancestor died at Kalaupapa in 1893.

HAYDN'S 'THE CREATION' CONCERT

Musical Voices Maui presents Franz Joseph Haydn's Oratorio, "The Creation," part of the 2012 Maui Masterworks Festival. Conducted by Robert E. Wills, this year's performance features a group of over 130 musicians and singers at the Maui Arts &?Cultural Center Castle Theater from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Tickets are: $25, $35, $45 (plus applicable fees).
