EPA to honor algae, biofuels technology
HONOLULU - A Honolulu company that develops algae for use in biofuels is receiving a clean technology award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
U.S. EPA Regional Administrator Jared Blumenfeld said this week work by Kuehnle AgroSystems on renewable biofuels will help make Hawaii energy self-sufficient.
Most biofuels used are grown on large tracts of agricultural land. But the EPA says algae can be grown on industrial land.
The EPA says Kuehnle AgroSystems has built a system to continuously produce algae for biofuel.
The company's system pipes carbon dioxide and wastewater from an oil refinery into tanks that accelerate algae growth.
