MAALAEA - Maui firefighters discovered early Saturday the body of a Wailuku fisherman who'd left his home the evening before to look for sea cucumbers off Maalaea Harbor's seawall.
A Fire Department ocean rescue team recovered the body of Gary Y. Ibara, 57, about 5:30 a.m. floating face down near the harbor's south seawall, according to police and fire officials.
No foul play is suspected, said police spokesman Lt. Wayne Ibarra.
The victim's wife had called authorities at 3:47 a.m. She reported that her husband had left to hunt for the delicacies about 7:30 p.m. Friday, but he failed to return two hours later as planned.
She drove down to the harbor to look for him and instead found his fishing gear near the wall's edge. She also discovered her husband's slippers and pole net floating along the water's edge, police said.
A fire rescue crew was dispatched to the seawall area at 4:21 a.m. and used personal watercraft to find Ibara, who was unresponsive in the water 100 to 200 yards from the seawall, officials said.
Maui police were continuing to investigate the man's death.
