MFD veteran nets promotion
KAHULUI - Timothy Herrick, a 10-year veteran of the Maui Fire Department, was promoted to firefighter II hazardous materials specialist.
With his promotion, which took effect Thursday, he was assigned to the hazardous materials team "C" Watch at the Kahului Fire Station.

Kihei meeting set for Tuesday
KIHEI - The Kihei Community Association will hold its monthly general membership meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Kihei Charter School campus in Lipoa Center.
The meeting will center around Makena State Beach Park.
State Parks District Superintendent for Maui Philip Ohta will be on hand, as well as Irene Bowie representing the Oneloa Coalition.
Maui Huliau film students of Save Oneloa will have a visual presentation.
Members are encouraged to donate nonperishable food donations for the Maui Food Bank.

Molokai panel seeks members
The County Council's Policy Committee is seeking Molokai residents to apply to serve on the Molokai Community Plan Advisory Committee.
Committee Chairman Riki Hokama said that nine of the CPAC's 13 members will be appointed by the council, with the rest appointed by the mayor.
Under the Maui County Code, the group will be "charged with reviewing and recommending revisions to the community plan" regarding the proposed decennial update to its community plan area.
Experience in land use planning is helpful, but not required. The Molokai CPAC is expected to begin meeting at the end of this year. Applications are available at the Molokai Council Office in Kaunakakai, or can be found online at www.mauicounty.gov/committees/pol. Hokama said applications should be received or postmarked by Sept. 21.

Tests may disrupt GPS service
Navigation systems using GPS service may be unreliable or unavailable to mariners and other users in Hawaii over the next three weeks as a series of tests are done to the Global Positioning System.
Testing is scheduled this week through Sept. 9 as follows:
* From 3 to 8 p.m. and midnight to 4 a.m. within an approximate radius of 60 nautical miles from position 22-49-12N, 160-09-27W.
* From 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. within an approximate radius of 298 nautical miles from position 22-05-39N, 159-45-11W.
* From midnight to 4 a.m. within an approximate radius of 425 nautical miles from position 22-19-23N, 159-58-02W.
GPS users are asked to report any service interruptions to the U.S. Coast Guard Navigation Center at (703) 313-5900 or online at www.navcen.uscg.gov.
