Ryan Koss emerges from the water during the USA Triathlon age-group national sprint championship on Sunday in Burlington, Vt. Koss, a 17-year-old from Kula, placed 12th in the 15-19 age group and 27th overall, earning a spot in the next year’s International Triathlon Union world championship in London — the top 18 in his age group qualified. The Seabury Hall senior completed the 750-meter swim, 20-kilometer bicycle leg and 5-kilometer run in 1 hour, 2 minutes and 52 seconds, a personal record. His time of 9:18 in the swim was fourth overall in a field of 1,024 competitors. Koss finished the bike leg in 31:57, and the run in 19:00. “It was great to end the season with my fastest sprint triathlon time ever in such a large event, competing against the best age-groupers in the nation,” Koss said.
