WAILUKU - A 29-year-old Paia man was being held Wednesday on charges of raping and assaulting his former girlfriend at her workplace Sunday afternoon.
Bail was set at $103,000 for Gregory Garcia.
He was charged with first-degree sexual assault, second-degree assault, third-degree theft, violation of an order for protection, abuse, intimidating a witness, kidnapping and promoting pornography for minors, said Lt. Jayson Rego of the Criminal Investigation Division.
Police were called after his 23-year-old former girlfriend reported being restrained and sexually assaulted by Garcia at about 3 p.m. Sunday at her workplace in Kihei, Rego said. He said Garcia also punched the woman, who has a court order for protection from him.
She was treated for injuries including facial bruising.
Garcia fled the workplace before police arrived and was arrested when he was located at about 1:30 a.m. Monday, Rego said.
He said the theft charge was for stealing the woman's cellphone, and the pornography charge was for sending a video to a minor.
