5 Palms

Both Kihei and Lahaina locations sway diners with value-driven menus, views

5 Palms in Lahaina used to be Canoes. Through the end of this month, it's celebrating the first anniversary of its new name with 20 percent off food for kamaaina. The special also applies to its sister location, 5 Palms Kihei, situated oceanfront on Keawakapu Beach.

But the kamaaina anniversary specials aren't the only thing swaying customers to come, kick back, and relax at the popular hot spots.

"We also offer Maui's best happy hours with half price on select sushi and pupu along with drink specials on mai tais, beer, wine and margaritas," says Kennan Randolph, director of operations.

“Our Kihei patio redo is well under way with a brand new solid roof,” says Kennan Randolph. “It’s still open nightly and weekend days.”

"We actually have two happy hours daily. The first runs from 3 to 7 p.m. and the late-night one runs from 9 to 11 p.m. Come in for the latter and you'll get discounts on the entire sushi menu."

Happy hour pupu include kung pao calamari cooked in a wok with peppers, Maui onions, peanuts and sweet soy sauce; Asian tacos with braised short ribs and jicama slaw; and crispy ginger polenta fritters with Japanese eggplant marmalade.

In Lahaina, former Malibu sushi chef Greg Tanihara is drawing in seafood lovers with sashimi trio or ahi, hamachi and salmon; along with ahi poke, tako kimchi poke, and Alaskan snow crab and cucumber salad that is so refreshing on a hot day.

In addition, both restaurants serve breakfast and lunch items all day every day from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., so you may wake up to a grilled Black Angus burger, say, or opt for Maryland lump crab and local avocado omelet with a side of Hollandaise in the afternoon.

Eye openers include the Greyhound, the Bloody Mary, the Screwdriver and the Mimosa. Other breakfast specialties are the Hawaiian sweet bread French toast and loco moco. Lunch entrees run the gamut from 5 Palms famous lobster BLT to Maui cheese steak sandwich made with prime rib to free-range chicken breast served with Molokai purple potato dumplings.
