Members of Maui Evangelical Church, located at 256 Hina Ave. in Kahului, are celebrating the church’s 46th anniversary at its current location.

Dorothy Lester, associate conference minister of the Hawaii United Church of Christ, will share the message "Singing With Joy," based on Psalm 84. She serves as co-pastor of Lanai Union Church with her husband, Bob Alpers. She worked for the national offices of the United Church of Christ for 25 years.

Maui Evangelical Church began at its present location at 256 Hina Ave. in Kahului when church members bought the property in 1966. The church traces its roots back to Alabama Camp in Puunene. That church was founded in 1922 to serve Filipino immigrants working on sugar plantations.

The founding pastor was the Rev. Pedro F. Royola, who was succeeded by the Rev. Emeterio Centeno, who served from 1923 to 1953. Other ministers at the church were the Revs. Jose Rosimo and Simeon Ibera.

The current pastor is the Rev. Water T. Baloaloa, who has been with the church since 1973. He also is the supply pastor of the Paia Hawaiian Protestant Church in Paia.
