Maui team wins Kauai basketball tournament

KALAHEO, Kauai - Maui repeated as the champion of the Girls Kauai Invitational basketball tournament last week, completing its unbeaten run to the title with a 45-12 win over Kaulupono on Saturday.

Dasya Tavares scored 11 points for Maui in the final, and Samantha Alakai had nine.

Earlier in the day, Maui defeated Kaulupono 48-28. Jayden Almeida scored 14 points for Maui, while Alakai and team MVP Patricia Batoon each added 10.

Cameron Fernandez scored 15 points in a 50-19 win over the Kauai Ballers on Friday. Alakai had nine points in that game, and Batoon had eight.

Maui opened with a 58-18 win over Team Lihue on Thursday, getting 12 points from Batoon, 10 from Alakai and nine from Fernandez.

Soberano records hole-in-one at Waiehu

WAIEHU - Samson So-berano of Kahului recorded a hole-in-one Wednesday at Wai-ehu Municipal Golf Course.

Soberano aced the second hole, using a 9-iron for the 139-yard shot, which was witnessed by Lito Sistoza, Art Obrero and Chester Rimorin.

Lempio aces eighth hole at Emerald Course

WAILEA - Vera Lempio of Kihei had a hole-in-one on the eighth hole of the Emerald Course on Monday.

Lempio used an 8-iron for the 82-yard shot, which was witnessed by Paul Lempio.

Lester Hamai golf event set for Oct. 13

SPRECKELSVILLE - The 39th annual Lester Hamai Memorial Women's Golf Tournament is scheduled for Oct. 13 at Maui Country Club, with a 7 a.m. shotgun start.

Maui women golfers at least 18 years old with a GHIN handicap of no more than 36 as of Oct. 1 are eligible.

The entry fee is $80, which will also pay for use of a cart, lunch and entry into contests. The deadline to enter is Oct. 1, and the field is limited to 72 players. Entry forms are available at most Maui pro shops.

Proceeds will benefit the Boy Scouts of America Maui County Council.

Learn-to-swim classes being offered to adults

KIHEI - Classes for adults learning to swim will be offered in two sessions, Sept. 5-19 and Sept. 24-Oct. 8, with instruction scheduled for 6-7 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays in each session.

The fee for each session is $100, and space is limited.
