A 39-year-old Napili woman has died from injuries sustained after a collision Thursday afternoon on Honoapiilani Highway near the pali tunnel, police said.
Arlyn V. Visitacion died Friday afternoon in the Maui Memorial Medical Center's Intensive Care Unit.
The woman was driving a red 1999 Isuzu Rodeo sport utility vehicle that was heading toward Lahaina when it was hit near head-on by a Wailuku-bound gold 2008 Ford Super Duty F-350 pickup truck that crossed the double solid yellow centerlines, police said.
The crash occurred at 1:33 p.m. as the truck was entering a curve in the road and failed to negotiate the right bend in the roadway, police said. The truck hit the front driver's side quarter panel and tire of the Isuzu, which was pushed mauka and pinned against the rock embankment, police said.
It took firefighters 28 minutes to extricate the driver and her front-seat passenger from the Isuzu, according to the Maui County Paramedics Association. Both occupants were transported by ambulance to Maui Memorial Medical Center. The passenger, a 48-year-old Lahaina woman, had been in stable condition before being released from the hospital.
Police said both women were using their seat belts and their air bags deployed.
Air bags also deployed in the truck. Its driver, a 35-year-old Lahaina man, was using his seat belt, police said. He was transported to the hospital, where he was treated and released.
This is Maui County's 18th traffic fatality for the year, compared with 12 at the same time last year. Visitacion was the third fatality in August.
