7 hikers rescued in Iao Valley

Seven stranded hikers were rescued from a ridge in Iao Valley on Sunday morning.

The hikers, males ranging in age from 26 to 69, were attempting to hike from Olowalu to Iao Valley when they got stranded on a 2,000-foot-elevation ridge, according to Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga.

The hikers called for help at about 4 a.m., but helicopter rescue operations were delayed due to rain, high winds and heavy cloud cover in the area.

Rescuers were able to fly in around 9:30 a.m., and airlifted the hikers to a landing zone on the valley floor, Mainaga said.

They were then airlifted to the Iao Valley State Park parking lot at about 11:30 a.m.

One of the hikers, a 69-year-old male, reported possible leg and rib injuries, but no medical attention was required.
