Trained rescue

September 7, 2012
The Maui News

First Photo: Maui Fire Department Battalion Chief Louis Romero (from left) maps strategy with U.S. Coast Guard Chief Erin Stapleton, Maui County Ocean Safety South Shore Capt. Jeff Meadows, and Fire Department Assistant Chief Derrick Arruda on Thursday morning at Ka Lae Pohaku Beach. The agencies were working together during a training exercise that simulated the rescue of a paddle boarder reported lost at sea. To help the crews practice plotting probable courses, and locating logical areas to set up their search grids while looking for an actual object, a real paddle board with a rescue dummy attached was set adrift off Kihei earlier in the morning.

Second Photo: Maui County ocean safety officer Kalaheo Barrows prepares to bail off the side of a personal watercraft after getting a ride to shore from ocean safety officer Cary Kayama.
