Man acquitted in fireworks smuggling

HONOLULU - A federal jury has found a Honolulu business man not guilty of charges of illegally importing confiscated fireworks that exploded in a bunker and killed five workers.

Jurors acquitted Gifford Koon Fo Chang on Wednesday. Authorities claimed that, as an agent for importer Tiger Corp., he and the company were licensed to import consumer-grade fireworks, but unlicensed to import commercial fireworks.

An inspection found there were commercial fireworks inside a shipping container that arrived from China in December 2009.

The fireworks were seized but later destroyed in the deadly April 8, 2011 explosion. Five men were killed when the bunker exploded while they were dismantling the fireworks.
