By the end of these six years with a Democratic-controlled Senate, Republicans will have used the filibuster to block legislation more than 400 times, annually double any of the previous 12 years under GOP control.
Among the latest bills being filibustered is one to create a veterans job corps. Other lock step GOP filibusters tried to block job-creating efforts, such as a huge transportation-funding bill. And there were cruel ones to block extending food stamps at a time of a weak economy and high unemployment, blocking extensions of unemployment insurance and payroll tax cuts, a middle-class tax cut and dozens of others intended to stimulate jobs and the economy. Others tried to block bills to prevent a repeat of the reckless private-sector financial behavior that brought about the global economic collapse.
During the past five years the Democrats have had a majority in the Senate, once by a one-vote margin, they had the 60 votes required to choke off a filibuster only for three weeks. No wonder President Barack Obama can't get anything passed.
The sole purpose of all these filibusters is to obstruct the Democratic majority and the president, as Republican senators have admitted. This behavior constitutes sedition punishable by up to 20 years in federal prison.
A senator's first duty is to the nation, second to the state because what is good for the country is good for the state.
Knowing all that, why would any sane person send another Republican to Washington?
