I am responding to an Aug. 28 letter regarding the importance of political leaders respecting and working harmoniously together.
The letter reminds me so much of how Republican Rep. George Fontaine and Democratic Sen. Roz Baker continue to and clearly demonstrate how Republicans and Democrats can work well together.
For the last two years, they have presided together at monthly South Maui town hall meetings. The purpose of these meetings was to inform Kihei citizens on Legislature issues regarding South Maui. These informative meetings were always conducted in a manner whereby one does not experience solely the voice of a Democrat or Republican.
Rather, our anticipation of legislative progress reports from both Fontaine and Baker were foremost. We wanted to know, learn and resolve together. With Fontaine and Baker, this has always been possible.
They conducted a common interest meeting integrated with questions and comments reflecting personal or collective concerns. We walk away from the meetings receiving sage responses equally from Fontaine and Baker benefiting the entire community.
One can only respect Fontaine and Baker as intelligent and caring community leaders who love Maui and are wholly dedicated to our residents and, for that matter, the state of Hawaii.
We need Fontaine and Baker's steadfast team effort to continue in their respective positions as members of our state House and Senate. They constantly demonstrate themselves as diligent team legislators giving generously to exercise total community results by listening to the people.
