Drivers suffer injuries in crash
A head-on crash on Honoapiilani Highway near the pali tunnel Tuesday morning led to the drivers of both vehicles being transported to the hospital and traffic being tied up.
White and silver sedans reportedly crashed while going about 50 mph, according to Ryan Joslin, spokesman for the Maui County Paramedics Association. A minivan then reportedly rear-ended the silver sedan.
Air bags deployed in both vehicles.
Medic 3 from Kihei responded to the 8 a.m. call about a quarter-mile south of the tunnel, Joslin said.
A 23-year-old male driver of the silver sedan that reportedly crossed the centerline was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center with abdominal and hip injuries. The 34-year-old driver of the white sedan was taken to the hospital with minor leg injuries. Occupants of the minivan were not injured.
Traffic was halted to clean up debris on the roadway, which was reopened at about 9:30 a.m.

MMMC dialysis unit under way
Construction has started on a new inpatient dialysis unit at Maui Memorial Medical Center, according to an announcement.
A certificate of need was approved for the project in 2002. The unit is located on the fourth floor of the hospital's Wailuku Tower.
"We are grateful to the many people who helped get this project started some 10 years ago and were instrumental in bringing dialysis treatment on-island," said Wesley Lo, Maui Memorial's chief executive officer.
The unit is being completed with state capital improvement project funding.
"The diligence of our Maui legislators to help obtain funding for these critical projects truly hits home in increasing access to services that Maui's people utilize," Lo said.

Man struck in robbery attempt
A Paia man was hit with a stick during an attempted robbery at an automated teller machine Monday night in Paia, police said.
The robbery attempt was reported at 9:54 p.m. as the 42-year-old victim was depositing money at the automated teller machine fronting Bank of Hawaii on Baldwin Avenue, said Lt. Jayson Rego of the Criminal Investigation Division. He said that the victim was confronted by a man who demanded money and was carrying a 3-foot-long stick.
When the victim said he didn't have money, the suspect used the stick to strike the victim once on the left side of his ribs and tried to take the victim's backpack, Rego said.
He said the suspect ran toward the area behind the bank and was seen jumping over a fence toward Luna Lane. The suspect was described at 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighing about 160 pounds. He wore a gray hooded sweatshirt, dark glasses and black baggy shorts. He had a blue and white bandanna over his mouth.
The victim didn't require medical attention.

'Re-Wailuku' workshops slated
A series of "re-Wailuku" workshops will be held, beginning Tuesday, to seek community input on defining the "brand personality" of Wailuku town, according to an announcement.
Maui County and the Maui Redevelopment Agency are leading an effort to improve not only the urban environment of Wailuku town, but its brand perception as well.
The workshops are part of a discovery process that is necessary in "creating meaningful, appropriate and consistent visual messages that will be used to help grow support and market Wailuku," the announcement said.
The workshops will be held at 1980 Main St. The schedule follows:
* Tuesday, noon to 2 p.m. and 5:15 to 6:30 p.m.
* Sept. 19, noon to 2 p.m.
* Sept. 20, noon to 2 p.m. and 5:15 to 6:30 p.m.
* Sept. 21, noon to 2 p.m.
The workshops are self-directed and take between 30 and 40 minutes, the announcement said.
The Wailuku Community Association is helping to oversee the effort to rebrand Wailuku, with the professional services of Sae Design.
