The Maui News

A 47-year-old man with a fractured ankle was airlifted from the bottom of a 20-foot ledge at Sharks Bay on Lanai after he fell Tuesday afternoon, a fire official said.

Lanai firefighters and a Kahului rescue crew aboard the Fire Department's Air One helicopter responded to the 5:40 p.m. call, locating the man at the bottom of the ledge. He was attempting to climb up the ledge before losing his grip and footing and falling onto rocks below, according to fire officials.

After suffering a compound fracture to his left ankle, the man had been incapacitated for at least an hour before being discovered. The man was flown to the nearby Hulopoe Bay camping ground and transported by ambulance to Lanai Community Hospital in stable condition.
