Funds for land adjacent to airport released

September 13, 2012
The Maui News

Gov. Neil Abercrombie has released $12 million for the state Department of Transportation to purchase land adjacent to Kahului Airport.

The funding was part of $147 million released statewide for various capital improvement projects.

The money will be used to buy 15 lots located between the airport and Spreckelsville that originally had been slated for sale as residential lots, according to a Department of Transportation spokesman.

"The purchase will prevent future aircraft noise issues and ensure that the land remains compatible with airport-related operations," Derek Inoshita said in an email.

Abercrombie also released $1 million for the Maui Memorial Medical Center to upgrade its fire alarm system.

The money will be used for construction and equipment for the system.
