September 14, 2012
The Maui News

First Photo: Kahului's Midori Orikasa is all smiles after accepting a lei from her kumu hula, Uluwehi Guerrero, at the start of hula practice Thursday night at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center. The member of Halau Hula Kauluokala, who was featured front and center during a recent performance, turns 90 today. Orikasa said she was born in California on Sept. 14, 1922.

Second Photo: The halau, led by the Na Hoku winning singer and kumu hula, sang happy birthday to her. "She serves as an inspiration for all of us," Guerrero said. Orikasa's daughter, Bernie Saiki, also dances with the halau. "She's musical, and she likes to try new things," Saiki said of her mom.
