The Hawaii Campaign Spending Commission determined this week that state Rep. Mele Carroll violated campaign spending laws when she failed to file a timely report earlier this year.
The commission has imposed a $462.50 late fee. Carroll - who represents the 13th House District that includes East Maui, Lanai and Molokai - will have 20 days to seek a contested hearing of the fine, said Gary Kam, the commission's general counsel.
Carroll did not return calls seeking comment.
The Maui News previously reported that Carroll failed to file a report on time for the six-month reporting period that ended June 30. The fine amount represents 25 percent of her contributions during that six-month reporting period.
She filed the report two weeks after the statutory deadline. She told The Maui News at the time that she had misplaced her paperwork, including copies of deposited checks.
Last year, Carroll was fined $2,608 by the commission for failing to file all five of her 2010 election finance reports on time. Commission staff said that Carroll has filed at least 11 late reports since 2008.
Carroll, a Democrat, is seeking re-election this year, and will face Republican candidate Simon Russell in the November general election.
