Dusty Payne of Lahaina competes en route to winning his first-round heat in the Hurley Pro Trestles on Sunday in San Clemente, Calif. The win was Payne’s first this year in an Association of Surfing Professionals world tour event, and sent him to the third round — he scored 12.47 points, defeating Australia’s Kai Otton (12.00) and Oahu’s John John Florence (9.00). Payne had been sidelined by a knee injury until last month’s Billabong Pro Teahupoo in Tahiti. “I’m just happy to be back in the water and competing with everybody and having a good time,” Payne was quoted as saying on the ASP website. “I went to Tahiti and I had only been surfing for a week and wasn’t surfing how I could.”
