State protecting HC&S’ profits, not people’s health

Each year, the state Department of Health issues Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Co. a permit to burn approximately 18,000 acres of cane. The permit starts out requiring that fires be started after 9 a.m. and extinguished by 6 p.m. and that no smoke can affect homes, roads, parks and businesses.
