Would environmental court try politicians?

September 19, 2012
The Maui News

The County Council comments of a possible environmental court makes one pause to think (The Maui News, Aug. 28). If the council backs such a proposal, who would be brought before it?

Many council members continue to back development in areas such as Makena and Honolua Bay. The runoff from development has been blamed for loss of fish and losing of much coral reefs.

The Environmental Protection Agency has cited our county government for injection wells, and nothing seems to get done. The state Department of Land and Natural Resources' track record could cause them to be brought to the court as well. The Legislature has routinely underfunded environmental concerns and, in the same light, has said the environment is our greatest asset. The value of the reefs and oceans is rated in the billions. Maybe our politicians should be all held accountable for their actions in areas of environment.

I, for one, would love to serve on any environmental court jury. I can guarantee that this is just never going to happen. Can't be enough consequences for those who disregard the wishes of many and build, baby, build.
