Economic, legislative woes the fault of Democrats

September 20, 2012

A Sept. 9 letter writer who complained about the misrepresentation of Barack Obama's record doesn't understand all of the facts.

The economic meltdown that began at the end of the George W. Bush presidency had its roots back in the Bill Clinton years.

The deregulation of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, coupled with the Community Reinvestment Act, forced the banks to lend money to people who were not in any way qualified to purchase a home. This easy financing caused an overheated housing market. This was the genesis of the financial problems that we are now experiencing.

Concerning the gridlock in Congress, this is directly attributable to Sen. Harry Reid. The Senate has not produced a budget for more than three years under his watch, even though legally required to do so. The House of Representatives has passed numerous bills, but Reid won't even allow them to be debated and voted on. He alone is the source of the congressional gridlock.

The Democrats had full control for the first two years of Obama's term and they made no attempt at creating jobs or repairing the economy. They focused instead on an unpopular health care bill and a failed stimulus bill which resulted in massive government waste.

It is time for a change in Washington. We need Mitt Romney, Paul Ryan and Republican control in the Senate so that we can remove Reid and break the legislative logjam that he and the Democrats have created.
