I recently received a flier from the Maui County Charter Commission regarding proposed changes to the charter that we will be asked to vote on in November.
I guess I can conclude that if the charter is amended to include, for instance, an Office of the County Auditor, that in the near future that office will be established without further input from voters.
I'm puzzled, however, that during this time of ongoing fiscal restraint, there is nothing in the flier regarding the monetary impact that any of these changes might have for the county and taxpayers.
In the case of a county auditor office, one should assume that an auditor will have, at least, a limited support staff. How much will it cost us? Will any of these proposed amendments provide savings to the county?
More information from the County of Maui is needed to make smart voting decisions regarding these changes.
