Short-term rentals spawn other problems

September 23, 2012
The Maui News

Well, it's been done and short-term rentals in our residential neighborhoods are allowed (The Maui News, Sept. 16). I guess Western influence really plays a big part on Maui.

There's another problem lurking in the neighborhoods now. Makeshift stores are all around now where frozen food like meat and seafood are being sold without taxing. Don't you need a permit for this?

If the Mainlanders can get away with short-term rentals without permits, why not let the other people make money out of their homes illegally too?

And don't forget all those parked cars on the side of the road in front of a two-story home now. When applying for a permit, you have to show ample parking for your dwelling; I'm quite sure you didn't show the side of the road. How many families in a two-story home? Where's the enforcement there?

Maui is getting more corrupt than the Mainland.

I hope the council members are happy. Re-elect? I don't think so.
