The Maui News

Five people stranded across a river while on the Commando trail in Kailua Sunday evening were rescued by a friend Sunday night, fire officials said.

All were reported safe with no injuries, fire officials said.

One of the victim's mother's boyfriend who is familiar with the area hiked the trail and found an area where it was safe to cross the river, fire officials said. He later led the group to safety.

Around 7 p.m. Sunday fire officials were alerted that five people were stranded across the river in the area.

The engine crew from Paia and rescue crew from Kahului responded. But due to nightfall and treacherous conditions, rescue conditions were suspended and were scheduled to commence during first light this morning.

The group was in communications with first-responders and were advised to hunker down for the night.

Fire officials were notified via a phone call Sunday night that a friend had led the group out of the area.
