A Sept. 19 letter writer asked why the speed limit on Lower Kula Highway was reduced from 45 mph to 35 mph between Longs in Pukalani and Rice Park.
Here's my tongue-in-cheek theory: Whenever a highway or road on Maui is improved by repaving or widening, the bureaucrats in charge will always reduce the speed limit by 5 to 10 mph to help protect the pavement from wearing out too fast. Why else would Piilani Highway go from 45 mph to 40 mph once it became a safe four-lane highway? How about Mokulele Highway? Just you wait, Hansen Road will be next.
Don't even ask me about a traffic light on Omaopio Road and Kula Highway. If the money's available, the lights will come.
