A walk in the refuge

September 26, 2012

First photo: Hawaiian Islands Land Trust adviser Fern Duvall (from right) and Director of Conservation Scott Fisher conduct a nature walk at the Waihee Coastal Dunes & Wetlands Refuge on Saturday during the trust's annual picnic.

Second photo: Paia's Nan Jackson was among those surveying the wetlands on the walk. The 277-acre wildlife preserve is owned by the land trust and was placed into conservation in 2004, after once being slated to be a destination golf course. About 175 people attended the free community event, which offered guided walks; a BBQ lunch; music by Benny Uyetaki, Joel Katz and George Kahumoku; and keiki activities offered by Pacific Whale Foundation, West Maui Watershed Partnership, state Aquatic Biologist Skippy Hau and the Maui Huliau Foundation. The Hawaiian Islands Land Trust paid tribute to retiring Executive Director Dale Bonar, who is moving on to new challenges after 10 years with the organization.
