Recently I received information about the charter amendments to be voted on during this year's election.
I was reading the third proposal concerning the establishment of the Office of County Auditor.
It seemed to have contradictory statements. On the one hand, the auditor is to be independent of the mayor and the council "so that the County Auditor would be able to issue unbiased and reliable reports to the Mayor, the Council and the public."
Yet, on the other hand, this person would be appointed by the council and may be removed by the council.
I would suspect that a person hired by and fired by the council would not be unbiased or independent of the council.
I may be wrong here. Can you explain the error of my thinking?
