1912 - The well-known Makawao Book Club is about to be dissolved by merging into the Wailuku Public Library Association. The old modus operandi of the club was for each member to receive a book for the fortnight and then to pass it on in regular order.

1937 - Maui National Guard officers and personnel are entering the final stages of preparation for the annual guard encampment in Paukukalo. The camp is for the 299th Infantry units of which are located on Hawaii, Maui and Molokai. Molokai's Co. K will be attending its first encampment.

1962 -As in the days of old - when salty whalers from the Seven Seas dropped their hooks in Lahaina Roads and swarmed ashore for fun and merriment - the Old Capital of the Sandwich Islands was expected to be bursting last night with the opening of the First Annual Whaling Spree.

1987 -For the first time in nearly a year, there are cattle on the island of Molokai. Some 9,000 head of cattle on Molokai were slaughtered starting in 1985 under a federally funded program to rid the island of bovine tuberculosis.

2002 -Sick and tired of waiting for the state to finally start moving on a hospital on West Maui, the community has taken on the task by securing a site for a facility and consulting companies to get it built.
