Questions raised over old, upaid traffic tickets

October 3, 2012
The Maui News

I went to the Lahaina Department of Motor Vehicle & Licensing office recently to renew my driver's license.

The lady told me that I had outstanding tickets from 1993 that hadn't been paid. I told her that's weird, there must be some mistake because I've renewed my license three times since 1993 and nobody has said a thing. I remember paying those tickets anyway.

She then asked me if I had the receipt showing proof that I paid the tickets. From 1993? I don't think so. I reluctantly paid the $174 that I owed.

Very strange.

Have old, unpaid tickets happened to anybody else?
