Crackdown on loud vehicle noises needed

October 3, 2012
The Maui News

Having relocated to Maui recently, I've been surprised at the number of illegally loud cars and motorcycles that drive around with impunity.

Here in West Maui, we can count on being woken up at least a couple of times a week by loud vehicles going along the lower road. And the daytime noise is equally obnoxious.

I say this as a lifetime motorcycle rider and veteran automotive journalist, but this situation seems to have gotten out of hand.

I see that there is an ordinance designed to combat this very thing, but it's clearly not enforced to the extent that it makes any difference at all.

This is not a case of loud pipes save lives. This is a case of seriously anti-social behavior going unpunished.
