Art in View

October 4, 2012
The Maui News

The South Shore Tiki Lounge in Kihei is a fitting place for a new show by Christine Benjamin. The California painter and illustrator loves all things tiki and is presenting her paintings and art dolls this month in a show entitled "Creatures of the Lost Island."

A reception will take place Sunday at 8 p.m. with music by Kanoa at 9 p.m.

Benjamin creates a universe populated with skeletons, tikis, aliens, robots, monsters, cool and funky people and animals . . . These characters often take on a life of their own, especially when she starts to create a painting or a one-of-a-kind art doll.

The "Maui Masters" art exhibition at Lahaina Arts Society will have a reception for participating artists from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday in the gallery located under the Banyan Tree in Lahaina. There will be complimentary wine and pupu, accompanied by live music.

Participating artists include George Allan, Randy Jay Braun, Jan Bushart, Mike Carroll, Michael Clements, Joe Fletcher, Betty Hay Freeland, Anna Good, Jack Hamilton, Julie Houck, Jim Kingwell, Fred Lorenzo, Ronaldo Macedo, Cheryl McElfresh, Susie Monroe, Sue Perry, Janet Spreiter, Michael and Monica Sweet, Martha Vockrodt Moran, Linda Whitmore, Jamie Roth, and Carleton Kinkade.

These accomplished artists have agreed to donate the majority of each sale to the Lahaina Arts Association's Art Outreach Program which serves the youth of Maui County through 10 free weekly art classes. Six of the classes are offered on Maui in Hana, Wailuku, Paia, Kihei and Lahaina. The other four classes are held on Molokai at Kaunakakai Elementary School during regular school hours.

There will be an opening reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday for the "Infinite Blue" exhibition at Hui No'eau Visual Arts Center in Makawao. Artists were invited to interpret the primary color in this annual color-themed exhibition. This year's juror is Rich Richardson, Executive Director of HAPA: Hawaii Academy of Performing Arts, Chinatown Artists Lofts & The Arts at Marks Garage. The show continues through Nov. 10.
