Boating safety course set
An About Boating Safety course by the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 21 at the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary in Kihei.
The workshop will cover:
* General information about boats and maintenance.
* Information on preparing for safe and enjoyable outings.
* Navigation rules and aids to navigation.
* Guidelines for operating a boat or personal watercraft safely.
* What to do in case of boating emergencies.
* Specific laws and regulations in Hawaii.
The cost is $35 for adults and $15 for children, who must be accompanied by a paid adult, and includes the course text.
Many boat insurance companies discount their rates for class completion. The course at the sanctuary at 726 S. Kihei Road is being offered by volunteers of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Maui Flotilla 3-26.

Monday debate will be live
A debate between U.S. Senate candidates Democrat Mazie Hirono and Republican Linda Lingle will be broadcast live at 7 p.m. Monday on KAOI AM radio 1110 AM and 96.7 FM, according to an announcement.
The event will be simultaneously televised on KHON-TV, Channel 2.

Project to block parking lot
Construction of a photovoltaic project at the Kihei Community Center will block off part of the upper parking lot from Monday to Dec. 21, the Department of Parks and Recreation announced.
The mauka side of the upper parking lot will be blocked off for construction, and no large buses will be allowed in the area.
Additional parking will be available on the multipurpose field below the pool.

Event slated to close lanes
Keawe Street's westbound lanes near the Lahaina Gateway Center entrance will be closed for about five minutes at 7:30 a.m. Saturday for the start of the Wiki Wiki 5K & 10K Fun Run/Walk.
The closure will be at the intersection of Keawe and Kupuohi streets. Drivers should expect slight delays in the area and are urged to drive cautiously near runners.
