Ritte has shown qualities needed in OHA trustee

October 5, 2012
The Maui News

Walter Ritte is running for an at-large seat in the Office of Hawaiian Affairs.

I've known Walter since childhood and have admired his character, understanding and knowledge of the treasures that life brings.

There are many who label him as an activist, but far from that, Walter has courage in his beliefs and is one who is committed toward protecting our rights as stewards of this aina, Hawaii.

Walter leads by trusting his heart in paving the way for enriching our cultural and spiritual heritage. When he speaks out, he aims for our rights and we must listen.

He occupied Kahoolawe to protest the bombings, which stopped. Kahoolawe now belongs to us. He rejuvenated the makahiki. He fueled interest in upgrading our fishponds. In the past, the fishponds proved so precious and beneficial to the livelihood of our indigenous people. He protects our water rights, promotes and teaches our youth the importance of cultivating taro and stopped state officials from propagating taro as a genetically modified organism.

Walter is now active in ending the indiscriminate use and release of plant chemicals that are being used to pollute the environment that we live in.

These are just a few examples of his community involvement. Certainly you may have witnessed many more in your relationships with this fascinating man.

Please support and cast a vote for Walter as an OHA candidate. His mana has not wavered and his interests rest with and for us.
