Before people begin petitioning against local companies, please consider the entirety of the situation.
Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Co. cultivates about 36,000 acres of sugar cane. It is preventing Maui from turning into a metropolitan island. If HC&S owns the fields, it prevents large corporations from turning Maui into another Oahu. There are also about 800 workers who would lose their jobs if the company was forced to shut down. Acknowledge their families for a moment and also the local economy being affected.
Everyone is always pro-local agriculture. Well, HC&S is home-grown farming and it needs support from the community. The company helps produce electricity to meet the island's power demand. Everyone on the island takes advantage of the benefits from HC&S.
The company does care about the public. It is trying to find alternatives and is doing collaborative research with the tropical agriculture department at the University of Hawaii.
People can receive advanced notifications through email, phone or text so they may prepare for the burning of sugar cane fields.
It can't always be about the individual. Sometimes the community needs to be more accommodating.
